The Happy Herbivore: a healthy, easy, informative vegan cookbook
The following video really speaks for itself, but in case you don't have time to watch it I'll just say that I'm really impressed with The Happy Herbivore by my pal Lindsay Nixon.
- It's beautiful - lots of full page photos of delicious looking food.
- It's informative - great "how to" sections and tips on vegan cooking
- There's something for everyone - whether you're looking for something fat-free, low in fat, gluten-free, soy-free, for kids, quick, or for someone unsure if vegan food tastes any good, you'll find a dish to make in this book.
Justin's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are Eco-Vegan!
I've had my eye on Justin's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups for a while, but for some reason I never bought them. Perhaps it was the price: $1.99 for 2 small cup seemed a little steep. However, I decided to treat myself when I spotted them at Whole Foods today.
Veggie Grill in Santa Monica (video)
Some time ago I caught wind of some very exciting news: Veggie Grill was going to open in Santa Monica! I was thrilled because it not only meant that one of my favorite vegan restaurants would be closer to my apartment, but all of my friends in the area would be able to experience it. Veggie Grill is always on the top of my list to recommend to people who want to try vegan food, and having another location makes it that much easier to suggest. Therefore, when I was invited to preview the new location last night I jumped at the opportunity, and it was wonderful.

Another gluten-free beer: New Grist
While shopping at Co-Opportunity this evening I stopped at their beer section to see what gluten-free beers they had. The entire selection is very modest, and after a quick scan I didn't see any of the GF drinks that I often find in Whole Foods. I was upset for a moment - how could my favorite market not have gluten-free beer? However, during my second scan my eyes landed on a bright label with some of my favorite works: gluten-free. I grabbed a 12 oz of New Grist and decided to give it a shot.
Q&A - Gluten-free, Yeast-free, Sugar-free, and Dairy-free Diet Advice (Candida)
I often receive questions from readers via email and I love them - keep 'em coming! Here is a recent question and my answer.
Question:
"I was hoping you may have some advice for my friend. She recently was told that for two weeks to a month she has to be completely gluten-free, yeast-free, sugar-free, and dairy-free to cleanse her body because she developed a yeast infection in her intestines. That means she cannot have her usual fruit, oatmeal and whole-grain breads, so pretty much she is at a loss for what to eat. She is also taking a host of herbal remedies and acidophilus, but I thought I would try to help as much as possible and do research and ask others for some help. If you have any information or suggestions that may help her, I would so greatly appreciate it."

Summer Cool Down with Gluten-free Vegan Beer
I've never been a big drinker, but in recent years I've developed a taste for beer and I like to have it on occasion. It all started when I discovered Fat Tire - not only is it delicious, but New Belgium is very sustainable and it's often on-tap in CA. That was my beer of choice until I went gluten-free and realized beer was full of it. I wasn't too upset about giving up that occasional treat, but was pretty happy to learn that there are a few gluten-free and vegan beers.
Gluten Free Beauty
Avoiding gluten in food has been much easier than I thought it was going to be, but I didn't expect to find it in beauty products. Turns out, much like animal products, gluten sneaks into some of the oddest places. If you are seriously sensitive or allergic to gluten this will be a big problem:
Gluten sensitivity is a systemic immune reaction to gluten anywhere in the body, not just that entering the body via the gut. Therefore, topically applied lotions, creams, shampoos, etc. containing gluten would indeed provide a source of gluten to the body (Celiac.com)
Almond milk, papaya, and peach smoothie
I recently made a big batch of almond milk, purchased a papaya because of claims that it aids digestion, and was given some peaches: so I decided to blend them all together and it resulted in a delicious, lightly sweet smoothie. Give it a try!
