Gluten Free Beauty

Avoiding gluten in food has been much easier than I thought it was going to be, but I didn't expect to find it in beauty products. Turns out, much like animal products, gluten sneaks into some of the oddest places. If you are seriously sensitive or allergic to gluten this will be a big problem:

Gluten sensitivity is a systemic immune reaction to gluten anywhere in the body, not just that entering the body via the gut. Therefore, topically applied lotions, creams, shampoos, etc. containing gluten would indeed provide a source of gluten to the body (Celiac.com)

Luckily, there are some gluten-free beauty products on the market, so I gave one brand a try. Appropriately named, Gluten Free Beauty was developed by a young women in North Carolina who is passionate about healthy living. I tried out the first products in the line: Natural Moisturizer and Natural Lip Gloss.

I've been using the Natural Moisturizer, which is basically an oil-based serum, on my face day and night and I love the way it smells and feels. My skin looks radiant after application! I love that it's in a glass container too - very eco. Don't let the oil base turn you off, because as stated on the website,

Using a natural, pH balanced, oil-based product can help re-train your skin to stop over or under producing oil, restore natural elasticity and reduce breakout frequency.

While I rarely wear lipstick, I do like to put some on when I go out, so I was excited about the Natural Lip Gloss. The applicator is really cool, though I had a hard time figuring out how to work it at first (you have to twist the bottom several times before anything comes out of the brush). I tried the Plum Crazy color, which is a deep shade of purple. Don't be afraid of the color - once blended on the lips it has a very slight tint and adds a great shinny gloss (and other shades are available). As you can see from the photo above, I had fun with it. ; )

Just like veganism, going gluten-free is not just about diet - it becomes a complete lifestyle. You may be surprised if you turn over and read the ingredients of your beauty products. I highly recommend Gluten-Free Beauty (even if your diet isn't free of gluten) and I look forward to checking out the new products when they become available!
