Back to Nature - a vacation from L.A.

When anyone in L.A. asks me where I'm from I say, "about 30 miles West of Boston". Then, when they ask, "what town?", I say, "a small town near Acton and Concord," because no one has heard of Harvard, MA.

My home town's population is about six thousand, compared to L.A. at around four million - that's quite a difference, and you can feel it as soon as you drive into town. There's no public transportation here, unless you count the school buses (though some would joke that there's no public transportation in L.A. either). As my sister and I drove down the street this morning, I was surprised at how green this town is (as in color, not eco). It's been a while since I've visited during the summer and it is quite a treat.

Instead of car horns and people yelling in Venice Beach, I woke up to the sound of a rooster crowing and birds chirping. When an ambulance siren wailed past our house, my mom was alarmed while I didn't even notice - that is everyday background noise in the city. Right now, my companion Evie is having the time of her life in the luscious back yard, while I'm working comfortably on the outdoor furniture. This is the life.

Funny, because I spent most of my life on this farm - amongst the horses, dogs, cats, chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys (what is this, Animal Acres?) - and all I could think about was moving to Hollywood. Yet, after living in the City of Dreams for 5 years I yearned to return to the simple life. Not that I want to move back here, I just wanted a reminder to slow down. L.A. is full of tension from the go-go-go lifestyle - but what's the rush?

I do have some fun plans while I'm on the East Coast. I'll spend more time in Boston (was there briefly last night after leaving the airport: went to Grasshopper) and will go to NYC for a day or two. But for the most part, I look forward to breathing fresh air on the farm. : )

Got any cool plans to escape during the summer? What's your home town like?
