Viewer of the Month: David Kong

I'm thrilled to share with you my first male featured viewer! When I started brainstorming about who to spotlight, David Kong immeditately popped into my head because he has so many commendable qualities and truly is an Eco-Vegan Guy. Positive energy radiates through his online presence and his healthy physique is a wonderful example to men considering the plant-based lifestyle. He describes him as, "a Vegan Urban Athlete with an eye for film" and to top it all off, he's a dad! I highly recommend you check out his Twitter page and YouTube channel for inspiration - I especially love the following video:

Here's a little more about Dave and his thoughts on EvG:

"I'm a thirty-five year old father of two who loves compassionate living. When I first decided to follow a vegan lifestyle I knew few of similar interest. I was already following my friend Robert Cheeke, communicating virtually via social media and one day he pointed me in Eco Vegan Gal's direction. The minute I began watching Whitney's videos my new lifestyle became natural. I felt encouraged with how she was openly real with her own beliefs and experiences. This was comforting; as my immediate community had no idea what to make of my lifestyle. Soon enough, I was pointing others in the EvG direction. I could go on and on how EvG has educated me, but because of her and many others like her, I have shared my education and change with many others. My father is one of those people. He took on a plant based lifestyle, reversed his heart disease, went off his medication and recently ran a 10K race. Every-day I raise my green drink to all who have made an impact in my life and Whitney is definitely one of those people."

Wow - how great are those last three lines?! And the photo of him in the EvG shirt is just too much! Thanks David for all the wonderful support and great vibes!

Last year on my West Coast trip with Robert Cheeke during his book tour we stopped in Ashland, OR to grab some food for the road from their local coop. The town was so beautiful that we decided to crash there for the night - it's Shakespearian, organic, vegan-friendly vibe completely won me over. We sought out a place with WiFi so we could book a place to stay and update our websites, which is how we stumbled upon GrillaBites. The green certifications on the windows and vegan items on their menu lured us in, but we had no idea how much of a treat we were in for.

Vegan Tour of Portland, OR with Robert Cheeke (Video)

I really should have posted this last week before Portland was flooded with vegans from Vida Vegan Con...oh well. This is a video I taped a year and a half ago when I visited PDX for the first time thanks to vegan bodybuilder Robert Cheeke - been meaning to edit it ever since but life got in the way until now. We went to so many restaurants and vegan shops in just 4 days, and each place is summarized in about 1 minute in this video. Here's where we went:

Robert Cheeke and I had the pleasure of attending the Farm Sanctuary Hoe Down and we had a fantastic time. It was my first time at the sanctuary and it was a wonderful reminder of why I'm a vegan. We also had the opportunity to interview many of the speakers, including Biz Stone, Will Tuttle, and Gene Baur. Gene is the president and Co-Founder of Farm Sanctuary, and in this interview he speaks about the history of the organization, advice he has for people who want to reduce animal suffering, stories of lives changing at the sanctuary, how you can support them, and internships on the farm.

Robert and I had some great conversations with Will & Madeleine Tuttle, on and off camera at Farm Sanctuary. Though I enjoyed listening to them speak, I especially liked the tour of their traveling home, which you'll see towards the end of the video. The Tuttles are truly living a eco-vegan lifestyle! Please check out Will's wonderful book, The World Peace Diet, which you can also get as an audio book. Will has some beautiful music on CD as well.

It's hard to imagine what my life would be like without Twitter. However, I remember the day I signed up - I had no idea how to use it, what to say, or why anyone would care. From my iPhone, I wrote that I was at a party. I read a few of my friend's posts. And that was it. A few months later I gave it another try, and I soon became addicted and listed on two major lists of eco people to follow (on Mashable and NBC)! Today I have written over 5,000 tweets and have close to 4,000 followers - wow. I use Twitter to spread the word about living healthy and green, and I love meeting other people who share the same passions. In fact, my boyfriend Robert and I started flirting via Twitter!

During the Home Tree Earth Day VIP ReceptionRobert Cheeke and I asked actor & activist Adrian Grenier how his diet was eco-friendly - he didn't have much to say on the topic so it was very brief.  He started off by asserting that he is "certainly not vegan", but said he thinks food tastes better when you're paying attention. In fact, Adrian enjoys "inspecting the tomatoes and feeling the melons". Check out the video to hear about one of his favorite vegetarian dishes.

As a big Lost fan, I was really excited that Robert and I had a chance to interview Michelle Rodriguez at the Home Tree Earth Day VIP Reception. She was quite down-to-earth yet very passionate and feisty. When we asked how her diet was eco-friendly, she cringed and said "you're not going to be happy with my answer", admitting she "needs some work in that area". Since she knew we are vegans, she teased us and countered with: "salads have feelings too!"

I was thrilled to see my former bosses Josh Tickell & Rebecca Harrell Tickell at the Home Tree Earth Day VIP Reception, and they had some wonderful things to say on camera. As with all of our interviews, Robert and I asked then how their diet was eco-friendly. Josh said, "veganism is the ultimate expression when we talk about reducing our carbon footprint", even though he's not a vegetarian (he tried but struggled with maintaining his weight and health). However, Josh and Rebecca are passionate about organic and local food - I saw them eat very healthy every day while working in their office.

One of my favorite interviews from the Home Tree Earth Day VIP Reception was with vegan John Salley. Like Robert Cheeke, Salley (NBA champion, TV Host, Actor, and Wellness Guru) is proof that vegans can be healthy and successful athletes. In this interview, he speaks about becoming a true vegetarian, producing the documentary Simply Raw, losing weight, and being a conscious capitalist. He also shares one of his recipes at the end. My favorite quote: "I'm not against meat, I'm for vegetables. I'm not against war, I'm for peace."
