One of my big eco-vegan missions is making my own everything, from meals to cleaning solutions to personal care products. Recently, it occured to me that I was wasting a lot of plastic containers every time I bought a new chapstick, and at $4-5 a pop it was getting expensive. So I decided to learn how to make it myself and discovered it was extremely easy, fast, and fun! Making it reduces packaging, saves money, and you get to control exactly what ingredients are used - talk about being eco-vegan! Here's how you can do it too (watch video or read written recipe):

Preparation time:
5-7 minutes
Once prepared, balm will become solid within 20 minutes

Ingredients:
  • Water
  • Candelilla Wax (you can buy wildharvested from Organic Creations)
  • Solid-at-room-temperature oil (I use organic coconut oil)
  • 3 liquid oils (I use organic jojoba, avocado, and olive oils)
  • Vitamin E oil
  • pure flavor/essential oil (I use homemade vanilla extract)
  • optional: organic stevia powder
Tools:
  • Glass container (I use an old oil bottle)
  • Pot/pan
  • Dropper
  • Container for lip balm (I reuse old glass tubs, or you can find other types new)
Directions:
  1. Pour water into pot and bring to boil
  2. Fill glass container with 1 part candelilla wax
  3. Place glass container (containing wax) in pot with hot water
  4. Shake or stir often while wax melts, which takes about 3 minutes
  5. Meanwhile, combine the following in a small bowl: 1 part solid oil, 1 part of one liquid oil, 1/2 part of one or two other liquid oils, few drops of vitamin E oil, 4-8 drops flavor **if using essential oils, add them when pouring into container
  6. Mix well
  7. Pour mixture into glass container to combine with hot wax
  8. Shake gently and/or stir
  9. Pour immeditately into balm container (and add essential oils if using)
  10. Optional: sprinkle in some stevia powder & stir
  11. Cover and let sit until it solidifies (takes 15-20 minutes, depending on container)
  12. Use on lips and enjoy the sweet satisfaction!
I encourage you to experiment with the types and amounts of oils and flavor you use - find what you like best and chapstick to it! Trust me, you'll be thrilled to save money and it's so rewarding to make your own!

If for some reason you don't want to do it yourself (too lazy perhaps?), I recommend that you buy Hurraw! Balm because it's organic, raw, tasty, and super smooth.
